The idea that we have lived before is one of humanity's oldest beliefs, central to Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism and found among the ancient Greeks, Celts and many Indigenous peoples. Many people today report past life impressions: déjà vu in a place they have never been, an unexplained fear or skill, vivid dreams of other eras, or a young child speaking about "when I was big." Psychiatrist Ian Stevenson at the University of Virginia spent decades documenting such cases in children around the world. You can explore your own impressions gently through meditation, dreams, journaling and noticing what draws you, holding what you find as meaningful story rather than fixed fact.
The point is not to escape this life but to understand it better.

Signs of past life memory
- Déjà vu, especially strong in particular places
- Unexplained fears or phobias, such as water, fire or heights
- Natural talents that came without effort
- Attraction to a culture, era or language you have no link to
- Recurring dreams set in another time
- Instant recognition of people you just met
- Young children's statements about another family or life
What researchers have found
Ian Stevenson (1918 to 2007) and his successor Jim Tucker at the University of Virginia's Division of Perceptual Studies collected thousands of reports of young children, often between two and six years old, describing past lives. Some details were reported to match real deceased people. Skeptics offer other explanations, such as memory errors and cultural influence. The research remains debated, and the stories remain fascinating.
Gentle ways to explore
- Notice your loves and fears. Make a list of places, eras, foods, music and skills that strongly draw you, and fears with no clear cause.
- Keep a dream journal. Set an intention: "Show me a life that helps me now."
- Meditation journey. Picture a corridor of doors. Ask to be shown one helpful life. Open a door, look at your feet, your clothes, your surroundings. Notice feelings. Return through the door.
- Visit museums or places that call you and notice your reactions.
- Ask what it teaches you now. The value of a past life story is what it heals in this one.
About past life regression
Some therapists and hypnotists offer past life regression. If you try it:
- Choose a trained, ethical practitioner.
- Know that hypnosis can create vivid but imagined memories.
- Avoid it during times of crisis or trauma.
- Have support for strong emotions.
A gentle note: If exploring brings up overwhelming emotions, trauma memories or distress, pause and talk with a trusted practitioner or counselor.
A gentle closing practice
After any exploration, bless the life you saw: "Thank you for what you lived. I release what is finished. I keep the wisdom." Then ground with water, food and fresh air.
