Candle gazing is a quiet focus practice. In the yoga tradition it is called trataka, and it simply means resting your gaze on a single point, here the small flame of a candle.
Setting up
- Choose a quiet room with no drafts.
- Place the candle on a stable, heat safe surface about an arm's length away, at eye level.
- Sit comfortably on a cushion or chair with a straight, relaxed back.
A five minute practice
- Take three slow breaths.
- Rest your gaze softly on the flame. Blink whenever you need to.
- When your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back to the light.
- After a few minutes, close your eyes and notice the afterglow and the stillness.
- Open your eyes and finish with one word for how you feel.
Gentle tips
Start with a few minutes and keep it relaxed. Never leave a candle unattended, and blow it out when you finish. For a calm space to practice in, see how to create a meditation corner at home.
Meditation is a practice for calm and reflection. It is not a replacement for professional care.
