Inner peace is not something you have to earn. It is already there, waiting underneath the noise. These six simple steps (a quiet place, a gentle scent, soft music, steady breath, a clear mind and a slow return) give that peace room to rise to the surface.

We live in a busy, uncertain world, and most of us are surrounded by information and advertising from the moment we wake up. Like many people, I went looking for a way to step out of that constant overload and give my mind a chance to rest. After years of studying and practicing meditation, including approaches drawn from Buddhism and other great traditions, I settled on a simple six step formula that helps me unleash the peace within.

Step 1: Find a Cool, Quiet Place

Six Steps To Unleashing The Peace Within

Begin by finding somewhere you feel safe and undisturbed. That might be the grass in your garden, a spot near a river or, if you live in the city like me, simply a corner of your living room. At home I sit on a firm meditation cushion, and outdoors I roll out a natural fiber mat.

Keep noise low. Few things break a meditation faster than air brakes, sirens or a neighbor's leaf blower. Choose a time and place where traffic noise is minimal.

Remove distractions. Meditation can feel difficult at first. It does get easier with practice, but in the early days even a small interruption can pull you out, so let the people around you know you need a few quiet minutes.

Feel safe. It is hard to release your thoughts when part of you feels on guard. Choose a place where you can fully relax.

Get comfortable. A session often lasts around 20 minutes, and it can take the first 10 just to settle. Sit on a comfortable surface. I love sitting on the floor, but if sitting upright is difficult, lean against a wall or use a chair. I avoid the couch, simply because it is very easy to drift off to sleep there.

Step 2: Use a Light Incense

When you first stop after a busy day, your body can still feel buzzy and restless. A light incense such as lavender can help mark the shift from doing to being. I like natural, gentle scents that fill the room softly rather than overpower it.

Buy incense from a reputable source, keep it away from anything flammable, and open a window if the room is small. If scent is not for you, a simple candle works beautifully too.

Step 3: Put on Some Quiet Music

Music can soften the edges of a hard day, but choose it with care. Look for music that slows you down rather than lifts your heart rate. Many teachers recommend flowing water, birdsong or other sounds of nature.

Personally, I find slow Baroque music especially helpful. Many slow Baroque pieces move at around 60 beats per minute, an unhurried tempo that invites the body to follow. I also enjoy chakra meditation music when I want to focus on each energy center in turn. A singing bowl is another lovely option: strike it once at the start and let the tone fade as you settle.

Step 4: Focus on Your Breathing

Six Steps To Unleashing The Peace Within

Now it is time to begin. I like to sit cross legged with my hands resting on my knees, palms open. If crossing your legs is uncomfortable, stretch them out in front of you, or sit in a chair with your feet flat and your hands on your knees.

Close your eyes. Breathe in deeply, then exhale slowly. As you relax, the events of the day will try to resurface. That is normal. Gently set them aside and return to the breath.

If letting go feels hard, try counting. Breathe in and picture the number one, holding your attention on it as you exhale. On the next breath, picture the number two. Continue counting with each breath. If your mind wanders to dinner plans or tomorrow's meeting, simply start again at one. Over time this simple practice makes focus come much more easily.

I also use this counting breath at night when I am finding it hard to switch off. Like any skill, it gets better the more you practice.

Step 5: Clear Your Mind

Once your breathing is steady and you feel relaxed, let your mind become clear. This takes patience, and it may take many sessions before it feels natural. Rather than trying to think of nothing, rest your attention on the space around you with your eyes closed, and simply exist.

When you reach this place, a deep sense of calm can wash over you. Many people notice a gentle tingling or lightness in the body. With practice, you may find you can return to this feeling more easily.

Step 6: Feel the Rush of Peace

Six Steps To Unleashing The Peace Within

Buddhist teachers speak of meditation as a path toward enlightenment, a journey that can take a lifetime. What I can say from experience is that when you truly let go of your surroundings and rest in peace, it feels like a whole new world. Even on ordinary days, setting down that constant buzz can give you a new definition of normal.

When your session is complete, let your thoughts return slowly. Open your eyes and take in the room around you. Give yourself a few minutes before you rush back into your day, and notice the calm that comes with you.
